Who Invented Mayonnaise?
While some insist that mayo was first developed by the ancient Egyptians and Romans who consumed an amalgam of olive oil and egg, others insist that the true invention of mayonnaise (a suspension of egg yolk, lemon juice, and seasonings) wasn’t invented until 1756. What has become one of the world’s favorite condiments was created as a part of a victory feast to celebrate the capture of Mahón. Later the sauce was formed into an emulsion through constant whisking by famous chef Marie-Antoine Carême to form the condiment we know and love today.
