Though technically different, Brie cheese and Camembert are often grouped together because of their similarities. Both kinds of cheese originated in the north of France, and are made from cow’s milk. They also both boast soft smooth interiors and white-bloomed edible rinds. These soft slightly sweet rinds are the reason for that creamy texture we all know and love. The “live” rind as they call it breaks down the proteins and fats within the cheese and leads to an increasingly soft and creamy texture. With all that being said, Brie is, in fact, milder in flavor. Camembert, in contrast, boasts deep earthy notes that are much more intense. Camembert is also denser than Brie and has a lower milk fat percentage, making it slightly less creamy than its fattier cousin. Though there are a few major differences, both cheeses lend themselves to any dish- from baked Brie in puff pastry to cranberry Camembert bites. They also make an excellent addition to cheese boards and wine and cheese pairing trays. Melt slices of either into casseroles, gratins, sandwiches, paninis, pizzas and more. These mild crowd-pleasers are the answer to any recipe in need of a little added richness and flavor! Whether you prefer the milder Brie or the leaner more intensely flavored Camembert, we not only have both but a host of other options as well. Explore them all at Gourmet Wholesaler today!
